Dell Finally and Officially Supports Solaris

HP has what Sun classifies as an "arm's length" agreement with Sun with regards to Solaris and its ProLiant rack, tower, and blade servers, which means Sun or partners certify the box and ProLiant customers have to buy Solaris from Sun and get support from Sun as well. Now that Dell has jumped on the Solaris bandwagon, HP will probably do it next, and then the most obvious company that should support Solaris on X64, Fujitsu, and its server partner in Europe, Siemens, might see the wisdom in getting Solaris 10 certified and preinstalled on the Primergy server line as well. Fujitsu-Siemens has been reluctant to do this because it wants to push the PrimePower and now Sparc Enterprise servers to Solaris shops.

Sun and Dell benefit from Solaris OEM deal

The recently sealed OEM deal between Sun Microsystems and Dell will widen the appeal of Solaris for x86-based system users, and will benefit both vendors, Gartner has reported.

"The agreement between Sun and Dell is another indication of the momentum Solaris has gained on x86," said Errol Rasit, a senior research analyst at Gartner.

"Increasingly, x86 Solaris is viewed as a viable Windows/Linux alternative, which is likely to add to independent software vendor participation, further accelerating the increase in Solaris adoption.

Dell to carry Solaris 10 on PowerEdge servers

Sun Microsystems and Dell announced Wednesday a distribution agreement under which Dell will distribute Sun's Solaris 10 operating system on Dell PowerEdge servers.

Under the multiyear agreement, Dell also will provide Solaris support services to its PowerEdge customers. The agreement brings two rivals together, with Dell gaining a relationship to better serve its customers already running Solaris on their systems and Sun a potentially larger market base for Solaris.

Dell plans servers based on Sun Solaris software

Dell Inc will license Sun Microsystems Inc's Solaris operating system and build server computers based on the Sun software, the companies said on Wednesday.

"Dell's offering of Solaris redefines the market opportunity for both companies," Schwartz said in a statement. "The relationship gives Dell broader reach into the global free software community with Solaris and OpenSolaris, and gives Sun access to channels and customers across the volume marketplace."

It's time to pay attention to Sun's x86 server biz

The fresh Xeon-based servers from Sun mark the company's most muscular play to date in the x86 realm. The four-socket 2U X4450, in particular, has Sun pushing the equivalent of a midrange SMP down into the heart of the so-called commodity market. This move plays well with Sun's historic strengths in the SMP (symmetric multi-processing) arena and supports Sun' "R&D will win" mantra.
